A major theme around the CIM CONNECT conference is inclusion of Women in Mining from the candid and very familiar talk by Jenn Stuart at the Women in Mining reception last night to the Allyship Research presented by Jocelyn Peltier-Huntley today. This is an important topic and we are also reminded that, trauma does not discriminate, "A diverse work force regardless of gender may have past experiences of trauma" (Think complex PTSD). You never know what someone else's reality is, so always be kind (vs "nice" - there's a BIG difference look it up!) If you are curious about the specific behaviours on how to be an Ally in your workplace? Jocelyn says Active Listening, Apologizing and providing feedback in a safe way are essential. This was a very timely presentation as just a few moments prior to this talk I shared my heartfelt gratitude to Samantha Espley, P.Eng., FCAE the Well Deserved winner of this year's CIM Diversity and Inclusion Award DIAC - Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee - CIM in her very intentional acts of Allyship when it came to PACE - Partners in Achieving Change Excellence's. For a women owned business like mine with no family ties to North America, Sam bringing up my business name in the right rooms and meetings has been instrumental in our growth and development as a company. In addition to this I have had a few mentors like Christina Visser & Mario Grossi who have taken the time to coach me in times of crisis. The most recent act of Allyship is Nathan Stubina, FCIM championing our mission of helping mining be the leaders in the effective adoption of life changing, meaningful technologies by choosing to lend his experience and expertise to be our CEO! If you are looking to be an active ally for a woman in business, here are my personal views on some specific acts of allyship that might be meaningful: 1. Get curious about what the business' value proposition, their needs etc. your attention first and foremost is the best act or allyship. 2. Be clear with others about bringing the business' name in a positive light in front of decision makers and opportunities. 3. Be candid with her about potential "Non Allies" or blind spots so she can take measures to educate, learn and improve. I am curious if this resounds with you?
